Downtown Oakland office workers who have relied on Bakesale Betty their once-a-week fried-chicken-sandwich fix will frown at the news that they’re closing their second location at 2228 Broadway for good. Owner Alison Barakat tells Diablo that she and husband Michael Camp spread themselves too thin, and even having scaled back to one day a week (Tuesdays) last year wasn’t enough. “We want to go back to being just a single mom & pop store, because that’s really what we are,” she says. The original Temescal location at Telegraph and 51st, which still does upwards of 500 sandwiches a day, will remain open Tuesday through Saturday. They’re looking for someone else to take over the lease on the space, which is actually several times larger than what they were using for the shop, with a second floor as well, though Camp tells the Scoop that they’re open to the possibility of doing another project there themselves if no one else comes along.
