The Abbey, which flies its consecutive awards for being elected “the world’s best gay bar” by Logo T.V., should also win an award for being the world’s most bad-ass gay bar. The West Hollywood lounge is striking a blow against homophobic chicken chains by introducing a new sandwich called “Chick-For-Gay” that will be offered at the hotspot through the November elections. Meant as an alternative for those who want a great chicken sandwich without giving their money to a discriminatory cause, the sandwich basically rips off Chick-fil-A’s own recipe, with a breaded boneless motherclucker served on a toasted buttered bun with pickles. As a counter measure to Chick-fil-A’s donations to anti-marriage equality advocates, 100% of all proceeds will go to the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which is on the front lines of the fight to repeal our state’s unconstitutional Proposition 8.

The founder of the bar, Dave Cooley, also says he’s happy to share the recipe with any other pro-LGBT business that wants to offer the sandwich for the same reasons. The move follows his decision in May to ban bachelorette parties until marriage equality is realized, on the grounds that the raucous displays were often wagging a right many of the bar’s patrons don’t have right in everyone’s faces.

Noting that the country’s battle over civil rights is increasingly being fought over something as seemingly innocuous as a chicken sandwich, Cooley says in a statement, “With the upcoming election, even our lunch choices are a political statement…people have to exercise their First Amendment right at the cash register by patronizing businesses that support our agenda and stop giving money to those that oppose equality.”
