Westside L.A. is in the throes of its flirtation with frozen sweet things. Sweet Crush Ice Bar recently opened in Brentwood (and not a moment too soon, judging from the sauna we’ve been stewing in all week), fast on the feet of Little Osaka’s booming shaved ice spot, Blockheads. The latest to set up shop is Perfect Blend, a smoothie and fro-yo slinger now serving aside Santa Monica High on Pico. The place is drawing in the tagged backpack set with healthy smoothies using organics, along with boardgames, chairs that resemble spoons, frozen lemonade, and free wi-fi, serving a short roster of rotating yogurt flavors like red velvet and fresh strawberry. The neighborhood is a little saturated with spots like this, but Blend’s location, across from a bus stop and glued to a high school so far finds it well-trafficked.

Treats

While that should cool down the high school crowd, a new business called Treats is setting up shop closer to Santa Monica City College, across the street from Shaka Shack. Currently under construction, the business must be counting on the popularity of shaved ice staying sustained, as this “ice bar” is taking over a rather sizable corner space, with the inclusion of more fro-yo. The business still looks a few weeks away from completion, but would be wise to put on the gas, if it really seeks to alleviate L.A.’s increasingly uncomfortable relationship with the sun.

Treats, coming to 1700 Ocean Park Blvd. Santa Monica.
