Seems Peeps-makers Just Born learned the hard way with its acquisition of Peanut Chews that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s what the Grey Lady’s reporting. After the Bethlehem-based company bought the iconic Philly candy, and re-branded it by dropping the Goldenberg’s name, changing the label and switching to a milk-chocolate exterior, sales of the molasses and peanut treat, which is as much a part of the fabric of this city as Ben Franklin and cheesesteaks roast pork sandwiches, dropped off the charts. Now an “old school” focused campaign launched in January that brings with it the original label, complete with the Goldenberg’s name, is putting Peanut Chews back in black, and its original dark chocolate coating.
