Over in Jackson Heights, an exceedingly popular leaf-wrapped dessert called paan — which ritualistically ends with spitting the chewed leaf out on the ground once the flavor runs out — is resulting in stained sidewalks, specks of gum-diseased blood, and frustrated South Asians looking to educate each other on America’s “social customs.” [NYT]
