Japanese rice-ball concern Onigilly, which began as a La Cocina-sponsored cart and occasional pop-up, is opening a brick-and-mortar shop at 343 Kearny Street in late August. Eater reports the news that owner Koji Kanematsu will be bringing his made-to-order onigiri to the FiDi with a soft opening possibly around Labor Day, and a grand opening in September. Onigiri, you see, are even more popular than sushi in Japan, and are easy-to-eat little triangle-shaped things with protein fillings (like the Japanese version of a tamale, with rice instead of masa), and a variety of sauces. In the meantime, you can grab some of Kanematsu’s rice balls at lunch time, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., every weekday at FoodLab (1106 Market Street). [Eater]
