Atwater’s Golden Road Brewing is releasing a new IPA this week, a possible counter-point to its very first release, Point the Way IPA, which emphasizes an ABV that’s lower than most in the genre of these hops-highlighting beers, increasingly synonymous with the West Coast. Called Wolf Among Weeds IPA, the name is a tuneful translation of the Latin term for hops, according to the brewery’s co-founder and L.A. restaurateur Tony Yanow, speaking with The L.A. Times today. Wolf in the Weeds sounds like a promising prospect for IPA-addicts who might not have been so crazy about that first IPA’s style-deviation, with an 8% ABV and four hops “added generously throughout the brewing process,” and bearing a piney profile with those tropical notes coveted by many IPA drinkers.
The not-as-good news is that only about 500 cases of the brew will be sold, though it marks the continuation of the brewery’s plan to offer a minimum of two limited releases IPAs a year, with another expected in fall (the first is the smoked IPA called Burning Bush). A good place to start looking may be Whole Foods, as most L.A. locations will be stocking the elusive wolf, maybe as soon as today.
