Bauer Calls French Blue ‘Unfocused’ and ‘Unsatisfying’

It's another two-star review that reads a lot worse than that.

French Blue, one of several restaurants recently opened up in Napa, sacrifices substance for style in the eyes of Mr. Bauer, and he’s none too pleased. It’s a first-time restaurant venture for architect Howard Backen and his interior designer wife Lori, and it stands to reason the place is handsome to look at (Bauer gives them three stars for atmosphere). But, he pretty much hates the food, with the exception of a few four-buck starter plates, and the hanger steak, calling the menu “unfocused and ultimately unsatisfying” and referring to at least one dish as a “curious mess.” Still, the restaurant manages to eke out two stars overall, but they probably won’t be framing this review by the door.
