Today we have an update via Mark Bieschke at the Guardian about the reopening of the Eagle Tavern and its new gay owners, Mike Leon and Alex Montiel. Bieschke spoke to them at a celebration of their lease signing on Tuesday at the nearby Lone Star, and though they’re feeling a little press shy, they said they hoped to have the place open in time for Halloween, with a slightly reconfigured bar and “some of the Eagle’s ambiance” restored. Further, we hear from outspoken activist and Entertainment Commissioner Glendon Hyde (a.k.a. Anna Conda) who was one of the forces behind keeping the place LGBT-owned and focused, who says, “People keep saying that you can’t revitalize queer nightlife in SoMa, but that’s just a lazy excuse for gentrification. I’m glad we could band together to ensure a future for queer spaces in this city.” [SFBG, Earlier, Earlier still]
