For many years, San Francisco has suffered from a severe dearth of decent bagels. And frankly, for those New York transplants who know good from mediocre when it comes to the bagel arts, hearing people rave about Noah’s makes them die a little inside, every time. But things have improved in recent years with the entry of Katz, and particularly with new pop-up outfit Schmendricks. The Chron does a taste test of bagels around the Bay, concluding that the Schmendricks bagel is, indeed, the most “delicious,” and “’dense and crusty’ with a wonderful chew.” Unfortunately, you still can’t get them every day as they don’t yet have a storefront — they show up on Wednesday and Friday mornings outside Fayes Video on 18th, typically selling out in an hour, and you can pre-order for pickup next Saturday at their commissary kitchen.
