Surely news of Philly’s food truck depot getting nixed came as a blow to both food-truckers and the fatties who follow them, but it hardly stands as a condemnation of the entire nascent mobile eats movement here. Trucks of nearly every stripe turned out for last week’s Night Market. Should further validation be required, the second installment of the Vendys should do the trick. The annual “Oscars of the street vendor world,” which pits trucks, carts and every other type of sidewalk chef against each other for a cook-off that determines which one reigns supreme, returns on July 28. You’ll recall last year’s inaugural Philly Vendys went down at the Piazza. This year, its going to take place at the lot near 39th and Market streets.
The competition is open to just about any food business that’s not anchored to a fixed location. However, the nominating process is only open for another few days. All nominations must be in by Thursday, July 5. The clock is also ticking on ticket sales. Just as last year, entry to the competition is limited, and it will most likely sell out. You can order tickets here. Proceeds go to benefit the Food Trust.
