Abeni Ramsey was a single mother in West Oakland when she began growing food in her backyard out of economic need. She began acquiring vacant lots to grow more vegetables, and eventually started City Girl Farms. She’s become a spokesperson for the urban-farming movement, appearing on the PBS series Food Forward, and now she’s opening her own restaurant in the heart of downtown Oakland called Township (1542 Broadway). For a while now Ramsey has been selling her vegetables to restaurants like Flora, and through local CSAs. Now she’ll be able to put her produce to use in her own restaurant business, along with partner Ibrahim Baaqee. We’re still awaiting more details about the concept, beyond the hyper-local farm-to-table aspect which will obviously be front and center, but we do know there will be a full bar.
