Bowery’s Restaurant Supply Stores Make Way for Restaurants

Here’s some downtown New York irony for you: As more and more restaurants move into the once-blighted Bowery, restaurant supply stores are moving out. Most of them go when they get offers they can’t refuse — like Attias Oven Corp, which is making way for the upcoming Paulaner brewhouse. After Paulaner put up good money, owner Simon Attias moved his business to Sunset Park (departing Bowery shops generally scatter to Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx). The owners of a glassware store are staying put for now, since they haven’t received an offer high enough to incentivize a move — but that will no doubt change soon. Only Bari Equipment and Restaurant Supply store at 240 Bowery is determined to stay put. Co-owner Franklin Bari told the Observer, ““People walk in every week with offers to buy. But we’re not going anywhere.” [NYO]
