If you grew up watching Nickelodeon’s wholesome yet messy “Double Dare,” you might’ve been a little shocked last night to hear the show’s ordinarily squeaky clean host, Marc Summers, dropping f-bombs and working blue for the crowds assembled at Fishtown’s Frankford Hall. He also hoisted a few of the beer garden’s hefty-sized hefeweizens while slipping back into his game show shoes to preside over Philly Beer Week’s “Dunkel Dare,” a grown-up and most sudsy send up of the eighties kids TV classic that launched his career. For the pop-up program’s final championship bout, homies from Yards Brewing Co. squared off against visitors Great Lakes Brewing. At stake was the winning brewery getting their beers put on taps at the Hall for an entire year.
The Great Lakes crew prevailed, cinching the win in the show’s final round. They won by just 50 points. Yards dudes Andrew Rutherford and Mitch Albach held their own through much of the contest, proving that they were both knowledgable about beer. But ultimately it was the physical challenges — they included catching eggs with cymbals while blindfolded, a whipped cream sundae frisbee toss, and digging deep into a giant, green slime-filled prosthetic nose to retrieve flags — and the visiting team’s ability to conquer them, that delivered the win.
