From the ashes of The Gold Dust Lounge (which may still live on elsewhere) rises a new bar, right nearby, in the coming months. Local restaurateur Sam Sirhed (Burger Urge, Fork Café) is revamping 222 Powell Street, currently occupied by the Union Square Gallery Market wine shop with its upstairs tasting room and wine bar. The project’s name: Sam’s Cable Car Lounge.

Sirhed has bought the full liquor license that recently belonged to the oldest Italian restaurant in the country, the shuttered Fior d’Italia, so it looks like he’ll be putting in a full bar and lounge at this spot, which has three levels and, of course, faces the comings and goings of the cable cars on Powell Street.

We’ll update you as we know more about the scope of the project and the timeline. Given the fact that this is not currently a bar, construction could be kind of involved, but stay tuned.
