Next Sicily Opens; Here’s a Teaser Video

Next’s Sicily menu began service Saturday, and it was only that morning that they posted a teaser video for what has been, so far, the most enigmatic of their menus to date. Although you see glimpses of the food in this video by Christian Seel, there is still much mystery (and even a little bit of a sinister air… this is an island that keeps its secrets) in the style of the video. But besides offering glimpses of charred artichokes, fish chops, and elaborate pastries, we also learn who one of the mentors for this menu apparently is: Fabrizia Lanza, daughter of the eponymous founder and current operator of the Anna Tasca Lanza cooking school in Sicily. (The original Signora Lanza passed away in 2010.) Her voice is heard (by telephone, it seems) explaining some of the fundamentals of Sicilian cooking as we catch quick Fincheresque glimpses of work at Next, intercut with old maps and photographs. The effect is to convince you that rustic Sicilian cooking really can come from a kitchen that, days ago, was making the most modernist of cuisine. Watch it below.
