Later this year, Jean-Georges Vongerichten will expand on the overwhelming success of ABC Kitchen by taking over the home store’s other restaurant, which is also owned by Vongerichten’s partner, Phil Suarez.

The existing spot, Pipa, will shutter in August and undergo a face-lift under the direction of ABC CEO Paulette Cole, the person responsible for the look of the store and ABC Kitchen. It will reopen in October as ABC Cocina, a Latin spot with ABC Kitchen’s locavore approach.

“We will have paella, croquettas, a lot of small plates,” Vongerichten told Grub Street when we caught up with him at the annual Citymeals chef’s tribute last night. “I have worked so much with Asian food and this is the same latitude, so you find cilantro and chiles. Chiles are my passion now.”
