Today is opening day for Hayes Valley Bakeworks (550 Gough Street at Fulton), the new non-profit bakery-café. As we mentioned earlier in the week, chef Alyssa Levy is doing a variety of sweets and savory items, including quiches, maple-bacon cinnamon rolls, and assorted muffins and sandwiches. Also, they’re selling Four Barrel coffee and will soon have wine, beer, and kombucha on tap.
The place also has a philanthropic purpose, too, on top of the food-related one; it’s a non-profit job-training program for disabled, homeless, and at-risk clients of Toolworks, whose primary mission is to provide services that increase economic and social opportunities for people with disabilities. At Hayes Valley Bakeworks these individuals will learn hands-on baking skills from Levy and others.
So, if you’re in the neighborhood and want to get coffee and scone and help a good cause, here’s where to do it.
