We know high fructose corn syrup is bad for us, but could the sweetener be as bad for you as, say, cocaine? Well, much-loved TV doc, Dr. Oz, is co-opting the Reagan-era anti-drug mantra “Just Say No” in an attempt to highlight just how hazardous HFCS really is. Despite the Corn Refiners Association’s efforts to rebrand the stuff as “corn sugar” and position it as a perfectly safe and healthy sweetener for processed foods, the great and powerful Oz isn’t having it. He and cohort Dr. Michael Roizen today penned a piece that cites HFCS’s negative effects on healthy heart function and the havoc it wreaks on the human arteries — the duo says you should dare to resist the stuff, no matter what street name it goes by.
