Two years ago this July, Santa Monica’s Dakota Live Music Lounge was call but annihilated by a fire. At the time, poor Alex Fieglein, the owner, told Santa Monica Daily Press that he looked at the damage and figured, “There goes my life,” while his staff was hopeful for a reboot by August. We’re happy to report that Dakota Lounge is coming back this month, planning a rebirth on Saturday, June 30, when the bar and performance space returns in soft-open mode with a no-cover show by City City for Fieglein’s birthday, complete with food and drink specials. An official opening party is planned for July 21. While the venue is yet to make a formal announcement, its last Twitter message, a poem from Saavedra left in February 2011, now rings like prophecy: “The phoenix hope, can wing her way through the desert skies, and still defying fortune’s spite; revive from ashes and rise.”
