Remember that thing about the city’s taxpayers footing the bill for Water Works Restaurant and Lounge’s utilities that we told you about a while ago? Well, it turns out that, that’s not the only private sector business sticking it to the city and its residents. Today the Daily News details another boondoggle carried out by Water Works owner Michael Karloutsos, but this time it’s his Boat House Row Cafe that’s getting all the attention. From 2006 to 2010 — it’s since changed hands and is now operated by Cosmic Catering — Karloutsos did not pay for cafe’s electricity, gas and water. Part of the problem, like the situation over at Water Works, is that the cafe is part of the city owned LLoyd Hall, and there’s only one set of meters. The other part of the problem is negligence on the city’s part for not collecting the payments and the cafe for not making good on an agreement to cover the cost of the utilities. Right now Cosmic Catering, which has also deferred utility payments for the past year, is working with the city to sort the mess out. [Daily News]
