In sad news, Grub Street has learned of the passing of Samantha “Sam” Mickey, the chef and owner of one of the city’s most beloved institutions, Sam’s Morning Glory Diner at 10th and Fitzwater streets. Following a long battle with cancer, Mickey passed away on May 12. At the helm of the Bella Vista fixture, which has remained one of the most popular breakfast spots and one of the most difficult daytime seats to secure since opening back in 1997, Mickey brought the glory, as promised by the sign out front, every day, one completely-from-scratch plate at a time. “Her diner seemed to be the first around here to take a leap in the right direction,” said longtime friend and neighbor Fergus “Fergie” Carey, owner of Fergie’s Pub, Monk’s, and the Belgian Cafe.
