Californians may get the chance to vote this November on whether genetically modified foods must be required to carry a label spelling out their engineered origins, after backers of a proposed ballot measure gathered over 971,000 signatures in support (it only needed half a million). This “Right to Know” petition pushes label requirements for GMOs including “biotech corn, soybeans, canola, and other crops” made through genetic engineering. Opposed to the transparency laws are, surprise, the dystopian-sounding Biotechnology Industry Organization and lawsuit-prone, toxin-sowing GMO giant, Monsanto. [Drover’s Cattle Network]
