Café Fanny Morphs Into Coffee and Wine Bar Called Bartavelle

Alice Waters hinted two months ago, when her 28-year-old Berkeley café project Café Fanny suddenly had to close, that there were already plans in the works for a replacement. Today we get more info, via Berkeleyside, and it looks like owners Waters and Kermit Lynch (whose wine shop is next door) have handed off the space to chef Suzanne Drexhage and her son Sam Sobolewski to open something called Bartavelle Coffee & Wine Bar. They plan to serve Sightglass Coffee, pizza bianca sandwiches, house-made charcuterie, and likely serve wines imported by Lynch. Also, there’s already a guy serving Sightglass coffees from a vintage espresso machine on the patio every morning, and he’ll be there until Bartavelle opens in early summer. [Berkeleyside, Earlier]
