One of the common Chicago food questions that gets asked at places like LTHForum but never really has a good answer is “Where can you get Indonesian food?” Angin Mamiri, the only mom-and-pop Indonesian place in town, is now closed; the closest you get is when someone occasionally puts on a rijsttafel, the Indonesian version of a smorgasbord which became a Dutch tradition as well during the era when Indonesia was a Dutch colony. A caterer called The Rice Table, operated by Chef Chris Reed and his Indonesian-born mother Jane Reed, stages the occasional rijsttafel around town, and the next one will be Sunday, April 29 at Vincent, featuring a menu of 13 dishes plus rice-based side accompaniments. Chef Chrissy Camba of Vincent has been expanding its menu beyond Dutch dishes for some time, but that has included Indonesian flavors, and it will be interesting to see if there’s any collaboration between Reed and Camba or any influence on her menu from things that are served at the dinner. The cost is $50, plus drinks and gratuity; you can order tickets here.
