Just How Tough Is It to Be Michel Bras’s Son?

A new documentary by filmmaker Paul LaCoste, Entre les Bras, delves into the relationship between renowned chef Michel Bras (who some say has had one of the biggest trickle-down influences on modern food culture) and his oldest son, Sébastien, who works with him in Bras’s eponymous restaurant. The film sounds a lot like the recently released Jiro Dreams of Sushi, as Time points out, except with French food. You have a father who casts a big shadow over his son, who in turn is trying to prove himself, all while it’s not even clear when or if Bras will fully retire. “I told Séba,” Bras says in the film, “if I ever stop seeing [my chefs in the morning] and stop going to the market, that’ll be the end of me, I’ll be dead.”

Anyway, Sébastien, le pauvre! Watch a clip below in which you can see the father attempting to hand off reins to his son, but still hovering constantly, interrupting, and, well, treating him like a kid.
