In sad news, we’ve learned that Tokio Global (formerly known as Maru Global), which we previously reported was on hiatus, is now closed for good. Following it’s temporary closing, Chef Ryo Igarashi underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. According to his wife, Nicole Igarashi, he’s pulled through the procedure and is on the mend. But since he’s been away, the Japanese street food joint’s been dark and Madame Saito, who owns the bricks, has decided to end their partnership. No doubt this is huge bummer, but there’s some good news to report.
Chef Ryo and Madame Saito have entered into an agreement to continue using the space’s kitchen as a commissary for Maru Mobile Takoyaki, which will allow Ryo and his wife to secure a Special Event permit, and operate as vendors at festivals and other events throughout the rest of the year. You can keep tabs on where Maru Mobile will be slinging its highly addictive octopus balls and other creative takes on takoyaki with the calendar on its website.
In somewhat related news, Elkins Park’s haute-kosher (hosher anyone?) Max & David’s has called it quits, too. The Insider reports that owner Steve Katz closed because the operation was hemorrhaging cash. Like Tokio Global, Max & David’s will live on in the form of a glatt-kosher food truck that soon will be setting up shop in a lot near 34th and Walnut streets.
