Was the Back Bay J.P. Licks, Well, Licked by Fro-Yo Shops?

Sad! J.P. Licks’s Newbury Street branch has closed. Meanwhile, in recent months, the street has become home to a profusion of fro-yo/faux yo shops: Pinkberry, Berryline, Tasti D-Lite and more. It seems that not even hemp ice cream could save JPL from its fate.

In a letter to J.P. Licks customers posted on Facebook, the company laments that its lease has expired after 20 years, and they simply can’t afford to rent their two-story building any longer. Owner Vince Petryk writes that the landlord will likely lease the space to a large retail company similar to Patagonia, Converse, or Forever 21, which occupy multi-story buildings on the block.

Meantime, J.P. Licks will continue to look for a “new affordable” home in the Back Bay. So, in other words, better love fro-yo.
