Gold Dust Lounge Update: Board of Supervisors Steps In

Much as Willie Brown predicted, all the attention that’s been brought to the historic Gold Dust Lounge’s eviction has resulted in a proposal by one of the Board of Supervisors to impose a moratorium on all building use conversions across the Union Square commercial district. As Supervisor Christine Olague said yesterday, “tighter controls are necessary to prevent the displacement of locally owned restaurants, retail stores, and entertainment venues by the highest bidders.” She went on to suggest that Union Square shoppers come to the area not only to shop, but because of the character and charm provided by older businesses in the area.
