Chuck Nevius Sides With Landlords In Gold Dust Lounge Dispute

Not surprisingly, Chron columnist C.W. Nevius has piped in regarding the Gold Dust Lounge eviction, and he says it all comes down four simple words: “The lease is up.” Nevius takes a hard, characteristically curmudgeonly line against any sort of wishy-washy preservation rhetoric, and takes the side of landlord Jon Handlery, saying that it’s “a shame” if the Bovises were tricked into signing leases with increasingly shorter termination clauses, “but they did sign it.” As for the argument that Union Square already has enough formula retail and this particular bar has any valuable character to it, he writes, “At the end of the day it’s a bar, one of many. It’s not historic.” The Historic Preservation Commission agreed with him this week, however that’s not going to prevent the Board of Supervisors from putting a moratorium on new retail conversions, and saving the Gold Dust in the process.
