Sushi Stop Takes Over Sawtelle’s New Japan, Also Opening in The Valley

Apparently there’s no stopping discount sushi chain, Sushi Stop, which already claims two well-attended locations on Sawtelle in West L.A. Two good turns deserve another, apparently, as the rapidly growing business has already staked out a third Sawtelle location, essentially book-ending Little Osaka with its $2.75 aburi, shooters, and rolls. The new Sushi Stop location is integrating itself with the street’s northern New Japan on Santa Monica Blvd., which is owned by the same team.

The result will be called “New Japan by Sushi Stop,” promising the former’s menu of terriyaki and hot dishes, only now with the introduction of the latter’s $2.75 appetizers, rolls, sushi, and chef’s specialty items.

We’ve long frequented New Japan for the syrupy, guilty pleasures of its beef and chicken terriyaki combo, but learned some time ago to avoid its lame sushi. The news potentially melds the best of these two affordable Japanese casuals together, like Voltron, to create a more powerful hero. Expect the transformation to be complete sometime today or tomorrow, with some changes to the interior as well.

And that’s not the only news at Sushi Stop, as the cheap eats restaurant is also expanding to Encino. A lease for the third installment has just been signed on Ventura Blvd., with expectations of opening in March at 17547 Ventura Blvd. between Encino and White Oak.
