Evan Malone and Jill Weber, the husband and wife team behind South Street’s west of Broad Jet Wine Bar, are shooting for a March 1 opening of the sophomore effort, Rex 1516. With Regis Jansen (formerly of Royal Tavern and Latest Dish) on the pots and pans, the cozy, 35-seat spot directly across from Jet will feature a Southern-inspired bill of fare. Menu highlights include crawfish pot-pie; seitan meatloaf; and pork loin stuffed with cornbread and sausage, served with sweet potato mash, collard greens, and morel sauce. Pastry chef Shamus Moriarty will tempt the sweet toothed with desserts like “pretzels and beer,” a dark chocolate torte with pretzel crust, IPA caramel, and stout chocolate sauce.

The bar program will have cocktails and craft beers curated by former Adsum GM Heather Rodkey.

“Faded Mansion” is the descriptor Malone and Weber are using for the space’s look and feel. They created the vibe using reclaimed and repurposed materials like marble, distressed wood, wrought iron fixtures a mirrors salvaged from the Frank Furness-designed Rittenhouse Club, as well as other materials rescued from Penn’s Church of the Savior.
