Steve Albini is a recording engineer of, well, cranky genius would seem to cover it pretty well, he’s known for not suffering tools gladly (basically, he regards record producers as Hitler, or cancer, or Hitler cancer) but has a string of amazing records to back up his brutally frank opinions from people like the Pixies, PJ Harvey, the Jesus Lizard, the Frames, Superchunk, etc. etc. Steve Albini also went to the Medill School of Journalism and has written about music over the years. Steve Albini is also married and makes dinner for his wife a lot. Do you get where this is going? Steve Albini has a food blog called Mariobatalivoice, named for the celebrity he sometimes imitates when presenting the Mrs. with food he’s made, and it reads like what a recording engineer would write about food— a kind of musician-gearmonkey approach to the process of working through a dish which is highly entertaining. And Mariobatalivoice has just been honored as one of the rare blogs to make the Saveur 100, Saveur magazine’s entirely random but perfectly captivating list of cool food things to know about: “An amiable blend of foul-mouthed rocker and earnest home cook, Albini never fails to surprise us.” It’s not online as yet but you can see it at #6 on the list on newsstands.
