Taking shape in an abandoned supermarket near 48th and Spruce streets is The Center for Culinary Enterprises, a new food business incubator from the folks at The Enterprise Center Community Development Corporation (TEC-CDC). Philadelphia Neighborhoods reports that when completed in July, the 13,000 square foot facility will house three shared-use commercial kitchens that will be available for rent for budding food businesses, plus an “eKitchen,” a restaurant and retail space. The idea is to develop resources to help cultivate new food-related upstarts by providing them with easily accessible and affordable commercial kitchen space to grow their businesses. In addition to the facilities and equipment, the new center will also provide input from industry experts.
Naked Philly says the restaurant space will house Little Louie’s BBQ, where neighborhood kids will have an opportunity to work, as well as be trained for careers restaurant and hospitality management. The two retail spaces have reportedly been leased to Kaffa Crossing, which operates an Ethiopian coffee shop on 45th and Chestnut.
