Venturing down to the southernmost reaches of his jurisdiction, Michael Bauer brings us a review of 1833 in Monterey, the restaurant in the historic adobe home that was formerly known as Gallatin’s and Stokes Adobe. It opened last summer, under the ownership of Rob Weakley and David Bernahl who also organize the Pebble Beach Food & Wine fest, and Bauer says “their attention to detail” is part of the winning formula. He enjoys the surprise elements in chef Levi Mezick’s mostly “straightforward” dishes, calling his gnocchi “some of the best around,” his bone-in rib eye for two “exceptional,” and says his whole truffle chicken “rivals Zuni Café’s.” All told, he gives them three stars, but dings them for sub-par service, giving them one and a half stars in that category.
