Is Marathon in the Midst of Meltdown?

Last week brought word that Marathon was vacating its roost at 10th and Walnut, following a legal battle between Marathon man Cary Borish and the building’s owners Bernard Spain and Murray Spain. No doubt this is a huge bummer for the homegrown mini-chain of fast/cas spots that have been steadily chugging along since 1984, but the silver lining was that a new project was already underway and former Adsum chef Matt Levin was attached to it. Then the other shoe dropped. Marathon’s stalwart location at 13th and Chestnut closed abruptly. The Insider reported that Marathon was pulling the plug there because of increasing rent costs.

Today, there’s a whole other side to that story: The restaurant reportedly owed back rent to the tune of $186,600, and was evicted. Those closings, and the shuttering of Marathon’s 40th and Walnut earlier this year, has Foobooz wondering if whether the entire company is circling the bowl. They’ve gone so far as to speculate which of the company’s remaining locations will shut down next.
