Michael Bauer says he’s “rooting for” Canela (2227 Market) to succeed in the Castro, speaking generously about the passion and sweetness that exude from owners Mat Schuster and Paco Cifuentes. He notes that the space was clearly “redone on a shoestring,” but adds “it’s just as clear that [Schuster and Cifuentes] are committed to their craft.” He loves a number of dishes, especially the croquetas, the flatbreads, and the fries. He’s less of a fan of several other dishes, noting a “mushy” Spanish tortilla and some bland meatballs. Also, the service, he says, tends to be slow. All told: an aw-shucks encouraging two stars.
