Ever since Chowder brought us the revelatory news that Union Square’s ambitious Journeyman planned to open a craft cocktail lair called Backbar, we’ve been anxiously counting down the days til it opened. And that day is (almost) here. In the meantime, jovial Drink alum Sam Treadway, who’s tending bar, shared his Manhattan recipe with us.
Treadway has dubbed his Manhattan the “Model T,” in honor of Backbar’s digs: The space was built in 1921 as the area’s first-ever Ford dealership. His variation on a house Manhattan goes like this:
1.75 ounces of Jim Beam black; .75 ounces of Carpano sweet vermouth, and a half-ounce of yellow chartreuse. Top it off with two dashes of Angustura bitters, then rinse the glass with a house clove-infused rum. Then call a cab and pass out in the backseat.
Treadway assures us that his bar will be open by Friday, and possibly earlier, though no guarantees. Begin cleansing your liver now, as the weekend surely won’t be pretty.
