We just had a story yesterday about a restaurateur who believes he was done in by discounting, so it’s a good time for the latest release of a discount system which is designed to help restaurateurs and fine food shops, encourage patrons to try new places, and donates $1 per deck to Common Threads. It’s the A La Card deck, now in its fifth year. Each card describes an interesting restaurant in detail and entitles the user to $10 off a meal— not so much that it really costs the restaurant, just enough to encourage you to give somewhere new a try. And unlike the typical “entertainment book” for charity, the restaurants in A La Card are always extremely well chosen from the places people are talking about— new to the deck this year are such restaurants as Vera, Leopold, Lillie’s Q, Green Zebra, Rustic House… and Manny’s. Besides using them ourselves, we often wind up giving cards away to encourage others to try a place we like. You get 52 $10 discounts for $30; to find out more and see the whole list of restaurants and shops, go here.
