LAist reports that Schaber’s Cafeteria, the 1928-spawned Downtown Broadway restaurant badly damaged in a fire during the 1992 riots, is springing back to life as a French bistro from the owners of Figaro Bistrot in Los Feliz. As part of the “Bring Back Broadway” initiative, which seeks to reclaim and re-energize the street’s forgotten historic spaces, the 9,000-square-foot space will be restored, keeping as much of the original structure and details, that were not critically damaged in the fire, as possible.

The space will then become the 1930’s-style Figaro Bistrot, with a bakery, kitchen, patio, full-service 24-hour restaurant, and bakery retail operation going into the ground floor to serve bistro classics, as well as pastries, cheese, and wine over all three meals. Future plans may involve turning the large mezzanine into extra dining space, potentially with live music. Owners are looking to an opening sometime in the middle of 2012.
