Kauffman Likes the Turkish Pies at Grill House; Miller Digs Bluxome Street Winery

Jonathan Kauffman goes from the “rich man’s idea of casual dining” that is Park Tavern last week, to the bowels of the Tenderloin this week to try Grill House Mediterranean — a new Turkish shawerma-and-pie place recently opened by a CHOWhound-beloved chef. He says it “hasn’t quite found its way in terms of food,” but the lightly smoky babaganoush is pretty good, and the Turkish pies stuffed with chopped chicken, tomato, and feta, are “almost as good as the ones at Gyro King on Grove” but only when they’re fresh. And we mentioned that this little Bluxome Street Winery had opened in SoMa, but now Virginia Miller takes the tasting room for a spin. She finds all their wines “balanced and interesting, particularly a Chardonnay, which reigns in typically over-oaked California qualities for a pleasantly acidic, well-rounded white.” Also, she tells the tale of a tasting at Mondavi’s chichi To Kalon Vineyard in Napa.
