What exactly did Billy Dec have to do with the opening of the Public Hotel and the new, Jean-Georges Vongerichten-y Pump Room? It’s never been entirely clear to us; perhaps the best answer is simply that he lent some of his local celebrity famousness and fabulousness to help the venerable hotel/restaurant and the out-of-towners fixing it up convince locals that here, after so many attempts at Pump Room reinvention, was a genuinely fabulous one that would genuinely attract the famous (which it seems to be doing) and restore some of the old room’s luster. Whatever it was, Eater reports that he’s cutting it out, as the relationship between the Public Hotel and Dec’s Rockit Ranch has come to an end— or apparently did shortly after the hotel opened and Dec had succeeded in helping Ian Schrager et al. make connections. From now on, please be aware that any fabulousness you detect there is entirely a product of the Public Hotel itself, the Shining-like spectres of long-dead celebrities such as Vic Damone and Kukla Fran and Ollie or whoever, and of course, whatever fabulousness you bring to the party.
