À Côté owner Jack Knowles, who still has his next-door project — called Next Door — in the works, is unveiling his long-delayed South American restaurant Rumbo Al Sur (4239 Park Boulevard) tonight in Oakland’s Glenview neighborhood. “Rumbo means direction,” Knowles tells the Scoop. “We’re just taking what we do at À Côté in a southern direction.”

The chef will be Matt Colgan, who’s also the chef at À Côté, and in addition to a menu of Spanish/South American tapas-style plates, there’ll be a cocktail program heavy on the tequila, cachaca and mezcal, and a wine list leaning heavily toward Argentina and Peru.

They open tonight and through the weekend, and then they’ll take a few days off and reopen on a regular schedule next Thursday.

Also don’t forget that Jack Knowles has his sights on San Francisco as well: Next year plans to open Chapel Restaurant and Preservation Hall West in the former New College campus buildings on Valencia, adjacent to the soon-to-open Tacolicious and Mosto.

Rumbo al Sur - 4239 Park Boulevard, Oakland - 510.479.1208 - Opening tonight at 5:30, closed Monday 11/14 to Wednesday 11/16.
