It seems like someone’s getting into the food truck business every day, but occasionally they’re getting out of it, too. Uptown Pie Co. listed their 1997 GMC step van for sale on Craigslist on Tuesday, and so we swung by the shop at 1319 W. Wilson (which it shares with The Cupcake Gallery) to ask owner Darius Williams why he was quitting the food truck business. Was he closing up shop entirely?
“No, not at all,” Williams said. “I’m just tired of getting up at 3 a.m. to bake for the truck and drive it around. It’s 4 in the afternoon and I just got back here to the shop. I’ve been working since 3 a.m. and you can smell more pies baking right now.”
Williams says the truck, which sells savory and sweet pies, mac and cheese, and pies in a jar such as key lime pie, has been successful, but that he has other ideas in mind for his business which he can’t make happen as long as he’s on the food truck schedule. “It takes too much time. I’ve been an entrepreneur for three years now and there are other things I want to do here.” He won’t reveal what those are yet, but says “I have a lot of followers on Facebook and Twitter, I’ve built that up like you have to now. When I’m ready it’ll be announced there.” In the meantime, you can follow your food truck dream for $15,000 or best offer by contacting Williams.
