Mark and Liz Mendez’s Wine Bar Uva is Now… Vera

After a brief legal skirmish with a wine bar in New York which asserted its ownership of the Spanish word for “grape,” the wine bar which Mark and Liz Mendez planned to call Uva has a new name. It’s Vera, which according to Mark Mendez is both his grandmother’s name, and the region in Spain famous for pimentón de la Vera, smoked paprika. The wine bar in the former Rushmore space at 1023 W. Lake Street will highlight affordably priced wines from Spain and other regions, including wine on tap, and a variety of Spanish-influenced small plates. The Mendezes, who met at Carnivale where Mark was executive chef and Liz was sommelier, say they hope to open the week of October 18th.
