More than 2000 people turned out in Holstein Park Sunday for the seventh annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest, in which an urban-hipster neighborhood happily gets its small town America on and bakes up a mess of traditional apple pies. 142 amateur contestants showed up with two pies each for judging and sale, while 16 piemakers competed in the professional division. The professional prize went to Dinah Grossman from Cheap Tart Bakery, while the five amateur winners, in reverse order, were Joan Elias, Laura Kaminski, Kathy Rice, Adrienne Smith and, taking first place for the first time after previous placings at third and fifth, Alison Summy. We snagged Summy for a quick interview a few minutes after her win and were surpised to learn, among other things, that she says she doesn’t really like pie that much— her idea of dessert is ice cream. Nevertheless, she takes her pie seriously, as you’ll see in the video below.
