“Which is the original Ray’s pizza?” ranks right up there with “Who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb?” for classic New York riddles, but now the Times has it that the true original Ray’s (simply dubbed Ray’s Pizza) is set to close at the end of the month. We’ve previously documented some of the squabbles among Ray’s heirs — not to mention the restaurant’s juicy, mob-tinged history — and barring a miracle, it seems these legal disputes have finally done Ray’s of Prince Street in. That leaves it to Original Famous Ray’s, Famous Ray’s, Original Ray’s, and any other imitators we’ve forgotten to duke it out for the title of original or next-after-the-original, or whatever it is they’re fighting about these days.
