Sibling Restaurant to À Côté, Next Door, to Be Even More Casual Than À Côté

As reported over a year ago, Oakland-based restaurateur Jack Knowles has been holding on to the shuttered Citron space next door to his À Côté (5478 College Avenue) with plans to create another sister restaurant there. Now, he tells the Chron the name, which is actually just À Côté in English: Next Door. And in a funny bit of trend reversal, Next Door will be a more casual and downscale companion to À Côté, even though À Côté itself was opened a decade ago as a casual companion to the white-tablecloth’d Citron. Because, you see, À Côté is considered fancy in these stripped-down times.

Chef Matt Colgan is simply calling it a “downscale American restaurant and bar,” and there’s still no ETA.

Also, Knowles’s pan-Latin concept Rumbo al Sur is still on its way, possibly this month, in Oakland’s Glenview neighborhood. And his big project in the Mission, Chapel Restaurant and Preservation Hall, at the former New College complex, is still on track for 2012.
