Last Wednesday, Roy Choi told us all about his recent vacation in Hawaii, where he ate shaved ice at Uncle Clay’s and lilikoi crème brulee at Side Street Inn. So it’s hardly surprising to see that Choi is still feeling the aloha vibes, as evidenced by the dishes he’s cooking at Picca next week. That’s right! We have the menus for this major league chef pop-up being held on Monday at The Townhouse. Check out what’s cooking.
To remind you, there are two dinners going down: a European-influenced repast at Sotto with Walter Manzke, David LeFevre, Matt Molina, and Nancy Silverton cooking dishes with Steve Samson and Zach Pollack, with Molina’s calf brain ravioli and LeFevre’s braised pork with crispy gnocchi.
The other dinner is upstairs at Picca, with Roy “Presidential OG” Choi and Dahlia “Butterscotch Budino” Narvaez joining Ricardo Zarate for plates of Choi’s papaya guava honey plate and roadside pineapple pork, plus a collaboration between Choi and Zarate of braised short ribs with pineapple aji amarillo glaze, and island coleslaw.
Which dinner to choose is the only catch at this point. The Picca menu sounds rather innovative and full of surprises (with a good chance it could actually bring improved Hawaiian eats to our shore. Sorry, The Loft.), while the other is clearly not for those who eschew cow brains and grilled tongue, even from the hands of a group of the city’s most capable chefs.
