JP: Hold the Organic Grocery Stores, But Bring on the Martinis!

Last summer we mentioned that a swank martini bar called Tonic would soon debut in Forest Hills. Well, that day might soon be here—interesting timing, since the very same neighborhood is currently hissing fire at that enemy crunch-demon, Whole Foods, for gentrifying the ‘hood. Apparently vodka shots are OK, but wheat grass shots aren’t?

Stranger still, Tonic is going to replace Griffin’s Cafe, the type of hangout where jovial locals hunkered like gargoyles atop sticky bar stools in a state of permanent midnight. Think of it like the neighborhood’s late, lamented grocery Hi-Lo Foods, but worse for the liver. (Whole Foods will replace Hi-Lo.)

Per BRT, Tonic now has a liquor license, so things are moving right along. Will neighborhood residents demand community-building exercises, like body-shot competitions? Or will everyone be too buzzed to care? We’re pretty sure Whole Foods sells terrific homeopathic hangover remedies!
